Client briefing · September 2026 · Gravity
Founder column publication note · October 2, 2026: This article retains the complete action framework of the September 24 briefing. Its nine-week schedule starts on that date; today, Black Friday on November 27 is eight weeks away. Google AI Mode/Gemini is rolling out gradually. Eligibility and an enabled default setting do not mean every product is already available for direct checkout to every shopper. Standard Shopify stores and the Agentic plan have different defaults: direct checkout is off by default on the latter. Check your store settings and each platform's current rules.
Google has opened direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini for eligible U.S. Shopify merchants. Customers can order without leaving the conversation or visiting the brand website. Microsoft, Meta, Perplexity and Amazon are also developing related purchasing paths.
This is a growth opportunity. Your products may be purchased directly inside AI conversations, opening a new sales channel and potentially increasing revenue. We recommend embracing this change, enabling the feature where appropriate and preparing early.
Approximately nine weeks to Black Friday, November 27, from the original briefing date · About eight minutes to read
01 Start by identifying your situation
Find the situation that applies to you before continuing.
United States · Shopify store: direct impact, act now
Eligible products may already be purchasable within Google, Copilot or Meta. Direct checkout is enabled by default where supported.
- Open Shopify admin → Sales channels → Agentic, confirm each channel's status and save screenshots.
- Read sections 02–06 and work through the checklist.
- Authorize Gravity to access Shopify product/order data and Merchant Center.
United States · Non-Shopify site: choose your route
Custom sites, WooCommerce and Magento are not automatically enabled. Choose between:
- Integrating Google's protocol yourself, with technical support.
- Entering AI channels through Shopify's Agentic plan.
- Deferring integration and preparing for discovery and referral traffic first.
Whichever route you choose, keep product facts consistent across your website, feeds and third-party channels.
Primarily outside the United States: learn and prepare
The Google AI Mode/Gemini and Copilot direct-checkout paths discussed here currently serve U.S. shoppers. Meta's current rules cover the U.S., Canada and Mexico; a single U.S.-only assumption does not apply to every platform. Google says the new UCP integration capabilities will expand to Australia and Canada in early 2027. International expansion is a clear direction.
Product facts and evidence prepared now can be reused later. Gravity will share market availability updates regularly.
02 Three points to understand
- Your products may be purchased directly in Google's AI conversations, creating an opportunity to increase sales. This is enabled by default for eligible U.S. Shopify stores where available. The brand remains the seller and handles fulfillment, returns and support.
- These orders bypass your website, so GA4 and website pixels do not see them, but Shopify admin does. Monitor order channel/referrer attribution. Relying only on GA4 can understate AI-driven holiday sales and distort channel decisions.
- Product data now influences whether an item can be purchased, not just its ranking. Incorrect or missing specifications, variants, compatibility, policies and legal disclosures can block direct checkout, produce risk warnings or mislead buyers.
03 Four purchasing paths
One platform can support several paths. Different paths produce different order records.
Path | How the purchase happens | Platforms involved | Where to observe it |
|---|---|---|---|
A In-platform direct checkout | Payment inside the AI interface without visiting the website | Google AI Mode/Gemini, Copilot, Meta, Perplexity | Shopify channel attribution where applicable; no standard GA4 record |
B Cart transfer | Assemble a cart in AI, then pay on the website | Google Universal Cart, some Copilot experiences | Website visit and prefilled cart, possibly with source parameters |
C Referral | Follow an AI recommendation link and buy on the website | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, fallback when direct checkout is off | Referrer, UTM and GA4 session |
D Agent-assisted ordering | An AI agent operates the website to place an order for the user | Amazon Buy for Me, Meta Muse | May resemble an ordinary website order; identification methods are not publicly specified |
Classification note: Classify by where the actual transaction occurs, rather than assigning a platform permanently to one path. Meta Muse using Shopify-powered direct checkout belongs in A, not D. Perplexity Instant Buy does not itself establish Shopify order attribution. “No GA4 record” refers to standard browser GA4/custom pixels; any intentionally configured server-side measurement needs separate verification. Keep orders without source evidence classified as unknown.
Earlier AI traffic reports mainly measured C. For the holiday season, A is an additional sales channel with no website visit, requiring order-side measurement.
04 Holiday opportunities and considerations
The mechanisms below are inferred from platform rules. Confirm their actual impact using your store data.
Opportunity
Conversational shopping creates a new transaction path. Customers can buy during search and conversation, shortening the decision journey. The holiday season provides a major opportunity to test it at scale. Preparing early may provide an advantage before competitors respond.
Six things to consider
① Reporting may understate AI's contribution
Direct-checkout orders generate no website session and are missing from browser-based GA4 “AI-source revenue.”
Example: imagine 50 Black Friday orders through AI channels but zero in GA4. The team may conclude AI produces no sales or attribute growth elsewhere. Monitor Shopify order attribution and report AI channels separately. Gravity's AI-channel sales reconciliation service can split orders by the four paths and reconcile them with GA4.
② Website legal notices and consent collection may be absent
Marketing consent, terms and disclosures implemented through checkout-page components may not appear in direct checkout. Brand legal teams should assess acceptability and implementation changes.
③ Product errors become more costly
Buyers purchasing in a conversation do not see supplemental detail on the product page. Incorrect dimensions, specifications, variants or compatibility can turn directly into returns and negative reviews.
Key reminder: negative reviews can be picked up by AI and cited in subsequent recommendations, making accurate product facts more urgent. Universal Cart can also surface compatibility conflicts; missing evidence may create purchasing uncertainty.
Evidence boundary: The original briefing's “immediately detected” language is a risk reminder, not a platform promise of real-time crawling or guaranteed citation. Whether reviews are read, cited or affect recommendations requires observation. Compatibility warnings do not establish a universal penalty for missing evidence.
Prioritize key SKU specifications, variants and compatibility relationships. Gravity's product facts and AI-shopping attributes service creates drafts for each variant, which go live after your approval.
④ Some basket-value tools may not work
Upsells, add-ons and loyalty components may not load. An upsell or rewards flow configured over three months may never trigger in AI direct checkout.
- Before Black Friday: Implement core promotions with Shopify automatic discounts and supported Functions, which continue to run in these direct-checkout paths.
- Medium term: Supply accessory/compatibility relationships through feeds and product attributes so AI can recommend associated products earlier in the journey.
- Monitor: Compare average order value between direct-checkout and website orders.
⑤ Promotions remain available
Automatic discounts, discount codes and supported shipping/discount rules implemented with Shopify Functions still execute. Prefer these mechanisms to relying solely on page scripts or checkout components.
⑥ Platform rules will continue to change
ChatGPT changed direction approximately six months after introducing in-chat checkout. Maintain consistent product facts across platforms and report sales by path rather than relying on a single platform.
05 Brand action checklist
These actions require brand decisions or authorization. Suggested owners are indicative.
This week: confirm the current state and decide
Action | Suggested owner |
|---|---|
Check each channel's direct-checkout status in Shopify → Sales channels → Agentic; save screenshots | Ecommerce operations |
Decide which channels should have direct checkout on/off; Gravity explains implications but does not toggle settings | Ecommerce lead |
Inventory checkout apps/components and assess unacceptable omissions | Ecommerce operations + legal |
Authorize Gravity product/order access and approve the Merchant Center agency connection | Store administrator |
Before Black Friday: complete purchase-critical information
Action | Suggested owner |
|---|---|
Place relevant legal/safety disclosures in the first 6,000 product-description characters, including applicable Prop 65 or battery shipping disclosures | Legal + product operations |
Align Shopify and Merchant Center return/refund policies | Support + ecommerce operations |
Configure holiday offers with Shopify discounts or supported Functions, rather than only page scripts | Marketing |
Review Gravity's priority product-attribute drafts and approve publication | Product manager + product operations |
Report in-platform checkout and website referrals separately; include Shopify order data | Data / BI |
Prepare support responses for orders from Google, Copilot and Meta | Support |
Approve Gravity's agency connection request within Merchant Center.
06 What Gravity can deliver
Platforms distribute products into AI shopping channels and complete checkout. Gravity helps determine which purchase needs to target, which facts and evidence to add, why products are selected or excluded, and whether actions change display, recommendations and sales.
Service | Deliverable | Required from you |
|---|---|---|
AI direct-checkout exposure audit, before Black Friday | Product-level explanation of purchasable items, exclusions such as subscriptions/bundles/customization, and implications of enabling/disabling | Shopify authorization; Agentic screenshots |
AI-channel sales reconciliation | Orders split by the four paths, net of refunds, reconciled with GA4 | Shopify order-data authorization |
AI shopping-shelf observation | Real purchase questions showing your and competitors' placement, price, ratings and purchase availability | Priority product lines and competitors |
Google AI performance snapshot | Original Merchant Center AI performance insights; distinguish Google's automatic competitors from your fixed competitor set | Merchant Center agency connection |
Product facts and AI-shopping attributes | Per-variant drafts covering specifications, compatibility, FAQ and compliance fields; compare against existing pages to avoid duplication; publish after approval and read back | Product information confirmation; publication approval |
Cross-platform consistency monthly report | Compare discovery, facts and purchasing paths for the same product on Google, Copilot, Meta and ChatGPT | — |
How Gravity explains its contribution
- List fact gaps Gravity identified and completed, and attributes published and verified by readback.
- Compare before/after using the same questions and competitors.
- Split sales changes by path and describe concurrent promotions and inventory changes.
- Distinguish directly delivered results from changes occurring during the same period.
Gravity's boundaries
- We do not toggle channels or accept platform terms on a brand's behalf.
- We do not click purchase, submit test orders or use real payment details.
- We do not rewrite existing marketing copy merely to make it easier for AI to read.
- We do not call Google's impression share total market share or attribute all AI orders to Gravity.
- We do not change Merchant Center, Shopify or website content without approval.
07 The original nine-week schedule to Black Friday
Example for a U.S. Shopify store, starting from the original briefing. Timing depends on authorization.
Phase | Brand | Gravity |
|---|---|---|
Weeks 1–2: establish the current state | Confirm channels and authorize access | Exposure audit and sales-reconciliation baseline |
Weeks 3–4: make decisions | Decide channel settings and resolve legal questions | Shopping-shelf baseline and first Google AI snapshot |
Weeks 5–7: complete facts | Review and approve attribute drafts | Drafts, collaborative publication and readback |
Weeks 8–9: observe the holiday season | Support and promotion execution | Weekly shelf/sales checks and post-holiday review |
We recommend freezing large attribute changes around November 13, while continuing error corrections.
