Traditional SEO has not stopped working. What is breaking is the assumption that ranking first will reliably produce the same volume of clicks.
Search pages are no longer just ten blue links. Google AI Overviews can answer before a user visits a site, while ChatGPT and Perplexity compare options inside a conversation. A brand still needs crawlable, indexable, high-quality pages, but rankings alone no longer explain who the user saw or trusted.
SparkToro and Datos found that 58.5% of U.S. Google searches and 59.7% of EU searches ended without a click in their 2024 study. SparkToro's 2026 U.S. update reported that fewer than one third of searches sent a click to the open web. Panel composition and methodology matter, so these figures show direction, not a universal benchmark.
Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords using aggregated desktop Google Search Console data. In its February 2026 update, the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page. This was an observational comparison focused on its sample and should not be treated as a guaranteed effect for every query or industry.
Seer Interactive adds the more important distinction. Across 53 brands, 5.47 million tracked queries, and 2.43 billion organic impressions, brands cited in AI Overviews delivered two to five times the organic CTR of brands that were not cited during 2025. Seer also observed stabilization in early 2026. Citation status matters, but the size of the effect is not fixed.
This changes the operating model. Brands should measure traditional rank and traffic alongside AI mention rate, citation rate, source type, factual accuracy, recommendation rationale, and competitor co-occurrence.
GEO is not a prompt spreadsheet. Repeating hundreds of prompts can show what appeared in one sample, but it cannot explain why a source was selected or which evidence gap should be repaired. Gravity's Brand Asset OS connects three structures:
- the brand entity manifold: who the brand is and how its products and differentiators remain consistent;
- the demand and semantic manifold: the tasks, constraints, audiences, and comparisons behind a query;
- the evidence and citation manifold: the first-party assets and external sources that support an answer.
Prompts are observation points. The optimization target is the verifiable connection among entity, demand, and evidence.
Brands should keep SEO, establish a governed brand fact layer, make important evidence crawlable and machine-readable, develop credible third-party proof, and test changes across engines, markets, and time. Product or Organization schema can reduce ambiguity, but it cannot guarantee recommendation.
The conclusion is not "SEO is dead." It is that rankings, generated answers, and citations now form one visibility system. Position one is still valuable; it is simply no longer the whole result.
FAQ
Q1: Does an AI Overview reduce every position-one CTR by 58%?
A: No. The figure is an average correlation from a defined Ahrefs sample and period. Brands should validate impact using their own GSC and AI citation data.
Q2: Does being cited guarantee two to five times more clicks?
A: No. That range describes Seer's 2025 sample. It shows citation as an important segmentation variable, not a universal performance promise.
Q3: Can schema alone earn AI recommendations?
A: No. Schema can improve machine understanding, but relevance, content quality, accessibility, external evidence, and platform policy also matter.
